Cheshire Speech and Language Therapy is an independent practice established by Claire Hawkins in 2018. I cover Cheshire, Shropshire and North Wales. My aim is to deliver a child and family-centered service for children aged 12 months to 11 years who are experiencing communication difficulties. I believe that every child is unique and therefore deserves a flexible, individualized service to help them achieve their potential. Communication difficulties are increasingly common, with up to 50% of children entering primary school with delayed language skills in some areas of the country. Communication is a vital skill, on which later learning and the development of social networks are based. Therefore for children to achieve their potential, the specialist services of a Speech and Language therapist can be enormously beneficial.
I will assess your child’s difficulties and the impact they are having on their and your families lives and work closely with you (and education settings/other professionals) to make improvements by setting functional goals.
Children’s difficulties often cover a broad spectrum of need, but will tend to be centred on the skills of listening, speaking and interaction.
All activities used to both assess and treat are fun and motivating, as research (and experience!) shows that children learn best when they are happy and enjoying themselves.
The initial telephone consultation is free of charge so please call today on: 07970504401, to discuss your concerns.
Claire Hawkins
I qualified as a Speech & Language Therapist in 2004 from University College London and worked in the NHS for a period of 13 years. I have a wide range of knowledge of communication difficulties gained from working within clinics, pre-schools, children’s centres, mainstream schools and specialist language units. I particularly specialise in the identification and treatment of early communication difficulties in pre-schoolers, but I have a wealth of experience working with children with speech, language and communication needs (including Autism and Down Syndrome) in primary school.
I combine my Speech and Language Therapy work with being a mum to two young children and am well aware of the importance of fun, practical activities that can be fitted into a busy schedule! In addition to providing therapy for a range of communication difficulties I am trained in the following specialist approaches:
• Lidcombe Programme for Early Stuttering intervention
• Palin Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (stammering)
ELKLAN ‘Let’s talk with Under 5’s’
•Picture Exchange Communication System (PECs)

"We approached Claire for support with our 3 year-old daughter after being advised by her nursery they felt she had a speech delay. Claire was friendly and warm and immediately put us at ease. She completed an assessment and provided an incredibly detailed and articulate report. Her advice and recommendations on activities to aid our daughter’s speech were so valuable for ourselves, family members and her nursery setting. Our daughter no longer has a delay and is ready to begin school in September from a great starting block thanks to Claire’s support and guidance."
"Claire works very effectively with my young son. She links in very well with school in terms of his targets, as well as keeping me informed. My son enjoys the sessions he has with Claire and is making good progress. I would certainly recommend Claire as a speech and language therapist."
"My young daughter has a stutter and we contacted Claire as we were concerned about waiting lists and wanted some prompt support. Claire saw us within a fortnight and we were grateful for the efficient service and detailed report we received. Claire was extremely patient with my daughter and took time to get to know her. Her professional but friendly approach meant that my daughter soon looked forward to her weekly sessions. As a family we learnt how to support our daughter and her help has been invaluable."
"We wanted to say thank you and how much we appreciate you helping our son with his language, he really has come leaps and bounds since you have been working with him. We cannot thank you enough. We feel empowered to help him further with what we have learnt from you."
Our therapists are full practising members of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT), the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and the Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice (ASLTIP). They are also all subject to an enhanced DBS check to ensure their suitability to work with children.
